Covert Colonial Mentality and Mental Health

It has been my experience, in many years of conducting research on CM or internalized oppression and presenting such research in professional and community events, that people frequently raise the possibility that just because they have some aspects of CM does not necessarily mean that they are ashamed of being Filipino, feel depressed, or have low self-esteem. In other words, many Filipinos and Filipino Americans may discriminate against FOBs or desire to look, talk, and act more Westernized or Americanized, but they also report being highly proud of their heritage and do not experience mental health concerns. Indeed, I myself know plenty of Filipinos and Filipino Americans who express similar experiences. In such cases, what I believe is happening is that different aspects of CM have differential effects on mental health. That is, research seems to suggest that it is the covert components of CM that is especially linked with poorer mental health than the overt CM components.
